Tokyo Olympics coming to Ipswich CBD

The world’s biggest sporting event will be beamed into Ipswich’s newest entertainment precinct, Tulmur Place, with residents able to catch Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games glory alongside local and national sporting legends.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the city’s Olympics Live site would be a chance to get to know several local and national sporting champions, and to #haveago at Olympic-inspired competitions.

“Ipswich loves sport, and there’s no bigger stage in world sport than the Olympics,” Mayor Harding said.

“On top of the daily international sports beamed live into Tulmur Place, I’m excited to have sports greats Robbie McEwan, Olivia Vivian, and Ipswich local Deborah Acason attending special events and activities during the broadcasts.

“There will also be mini-Olympic challenges for sports fans of all ages to get into the spirit of the Games, and to #haveago at something new.

“Olympics Live presented by Westpac would not be possible without our partnership with the Australian Olympic Committee, and I thank them for the opportunity to share the Games with the City of Ipswich.

“I’m so excited our community will get to share in the spirit of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, and I can’t wait to see Tulmur Place covered in green and gold supporters.”

Ipswich has long and proud history of developing sporting champions including the following Olympians: Baseballer Andrew Thomas Campbell, soccer player Colin Kitching, racewalker Dane Bird-Smith, short track speed skaters Deanna Lockett and Alexander McEwan, volleyballer Grant Sorensen, swimmer Leah Neale, high jumper Michele Brown, and cyclists Lisa Mathison and Ryan Bayley.

The Olympics Live site and community activities will be held in Tulmur Place and on the big screen from 9am to 5pm, 23 July until 8 August.
