Sustainable Ipswich hosts free cycling and maintenance workshops

Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan gets ready for Roadie Rob’s workshop for Sustainable Ipswich.

Dust off the bike in your garage and polish your cycling skills as part of the 2022 Sustainable Ipswich program of events.

Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan said free workshops on rider confidence and bike maintenance would be held on 20 October at Ipswich Cycle Park.

“The workshops, offered through council’s Active Healthy program, are aimed at adults wanting to develop skills needed to be confident to ride regularly on bike paths and bikeways,” Cr Milligan said.

“When people feel confident as cyclists they are empowered to take the active transport option, which is good for their health and good for the environment.

“Opting for active transport such as walking and cycling reduces traffic congestion, parking demands and carbon and air pollutant emissions. This makes for a more sustainable city.”

Councillor Milligan said the workshops are being held the same week as National Ride2Work Day, Australia’s largest celebration of commuter riding.

“These workshops are a great chance to give commuter cycling a go,” Cr Milligan said.

The workshops will be held with ‘Roadie Rob’ who has a lifetime passion for riding and coaching.

“Riding a bicycle is for everyone – especially in Ipswich where the terrain is mainly flat and you can get around easily,” Cr Milligan said.

“The basic skills in these workshops are important to keep you safe and have fun on a bike.

“As long as you can ride a bike, whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, you will learn something.”

More than 50 per cent of car trips are less than five kilometers, and Roadie Rob said cycling was a great alternative.

“Cycling keeps you fit, and it does not cost you any petrol – so it is a cheaper option than driving on those short trips and it keeps you healthy,” Cr Milligan said.

Sustainable Ipswich is an annual celebration of everyday actions we can take as a community to create a more liveable city.

It is an opportunity for the community and local businesses to be involved in promoting and celebrating sustainability and our environment.

Sharing stories, knowledge and ideas helps us all live, eat and play the sustainable way!

By working together and making informed choices, we can create a liveable and resilient city for current and future generations.
