A spectacular immersive light display and larger-than-life installations are set to transform the Ipswich CBD’s revitalised heart into the ‘St Nicholas Precinct’ as the centrepiece of the city’s Christmas celebrations, running nightly from 9 to 18 December.
Designed by acclaimed event and lighting specialist Sharon Penny, almost 250 metres of wondrous lights have created a magical walk-through experience that welcomes visitors to the precinct.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the spirit of the festive season will again be front and centre in the reimagined Nicholas Street Precinct with vivid lights and fun activities for the whole family.
“The centrepiece of Ipswich’s celebrations will again return to our city’s revitalised urban heart, the Nicholas Street Precinct, transformed into the popular St Nicholas Precinct,” Mayor Harding said.
“From 9 to 18 December, Tulmur Place and the Precinct will capture the spirit of the season with a spectacular atmosphere of lights, colour and magical moments for all to explore and enjoy.
“I also encourage those visiting Ipswich Central to dine at our great restaurants around Nicholas Street Precinct and Top of Town, as well as stalls during the St Nicholas Precinct’s daily program.”
Economic and Industry Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Nicole Jonic said the temporary transformation will see the Precinct full of colourful lights, Christmas characters and fun.
“With free entry each night, gather your family and friends to experience live entertainment, festive food and wonderful photo moments during the St Nicholas Precinct’s spectacular lights display,” Cr Jonic said.
Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the centrepiece of the city’s festive celebrations will fill the Nicholas Street Precinct with Christmas magic.
“After the success of the inaugural St Nicholas Precinct, the revitalised Precinct will again evoke the spirit of the season with spectacular lights and magical moments for all ages to enjoy,” Cr Doyle said.
Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner said the St Nicholas Precinct will include a range of daily free family-friendly events, attractions and activities.
“Departing from the St Nicholas Precinct across two weekends, Santa on Tour will see a merry fleet cruise through suburbs, stopping at local parks and community locations on 9, 10, 16 and 17 December to spread festive cheer with help from local rural fire service personnel,” Cr Fechner said.
Amateur photographers who want to use tripods and other bulky equipment are asked to avoid peak times and be mindful of other visitors.
Undercover parking is available in the Nicholas Street Precinct, free for the first three hours and entry after 5pm accessible from Bremer Street, Ipswich.
