The busy intersection of Waterworks and Holdsworth roads in North Ipswich has been made safer with the installation of new signage and improved road markings informing drivers of the upcoming stop.
Ipswich City Council Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the intersection had caused concern for motorists.
“Council has listened to the voices of residents and installed a larger stop sign with an orange border and new road markings reminding motorists of the requirement to stop at the intersection,” Cr Antoniolli said.
“The intersection has been known by locals as a trouble spot with near misses and several accidents over the past couple of years.
“These upgrades will remind drivers to come to a complete stop and ensure it’s safe before proceeding through the intersection.”
Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden, who advocated for the improvements, welcomed the changes at the intersection.
“Residents who frequent the intersection have been reaching out to me consistently to express their concern with it,” Cr Madden said.
“Concerned motorists have spoken out about drivers who shoot through the intersection without coming to a stop, causing very close calls on an almost daily basis.
“With Ipswich growing quickly, the intersection has seen an increase in traffic over the past couple of years, escalating the number of incidents.
“I’m pleased that these changes, while minor in nature, will make the requirement to stop more evident and slow motorists down.”
