Preserving the past: Find out how you can be involved

Most of us have found more time on our hands as we remain in isolation.

So now is the perfect time to turn a passion for local history into a book or video or even a movie, to name a few.

The Viva Cribb Bursary offers up to $5,000 of funding to help with a project on a significant aspect of Ipswich’s local history and it is open to enter from now until 22 May 2020.

It can be in a variety of formats, from a book to an app or video, as long as it’s on someone or something connected to Ipswich.

Over a decade of stories have been funded by Ipswich City Council’s Viva Cribb Bursary, named in honour of Viva Cribb, who demonstrated a dedication to the preservation of the history of Ipswich.

The funding is up for grabs to individuals or non-profit groups assisting with costs related to a project that documents or records a significant aspect of the local history of Ipswich.

Community, Cultural and Economic Development general manager Ben Pole said the bursary fosters an appreciation of the city’s local history and heritage.

“We want to encourage residents to document issues of historical significance to Ipswich,” Mr Pole said.

“The completed work is then made available for the whole community to download and read on Picture Ipswich.

“Recording, keeping and sharing local stories is vial otherwise those important stories will be lost to time.

“By preserving the past we give future generations a chance to learn and grow from it.”

Eligible projects must have a substantive connection to an identified area of Ipswich history and can be in the form of a printed book, web resource (e-book or mobile app), edited oral histories, short film or digital stories, or other suitable format.

  • Architects, builders, tradespeople
