The first in-real-life glimpse of what a reinstated Nicholas Street link between Brisbane and Bell streets will look like has been revealed.
Work is progressing on the new one-way, low-speed Nicholas Street as part of the CBD redevelopment project.
Kerbs, gutters and road edges, located at the entry of the future Metro retail and dining precinct, show the early stages of the precinct’s future ‘kiss and ride’ drop off and pick up points and short-term parking spaces.
The shape of the road is emerging, with large areas of the former pedestrian mall now concreted and ready for the installation of paving stones.
Visitors to the precinct will also notice changes to a small laneway just down from Ipswich City Mall Newsagency.
The laneway has been given a fresh look after it was repaved using repurposed pavers from the old mall.
Work will start on sections of the footpaths over the next few weekends.
Working outside of trading hours means the construction crews will have greater access to the areas while ensuring business in the precinct are not impacted.
On Ipswich Show Day – Friday, 17 May – works are expected to start on sections of the footpath on the left side of the former mall, between the temporary car park entry tunnel, up to the former Birch Carroll and Coyle Cinema escalators.
During the first part of these works, crews will remove old pavers which will allow them to investigate the state of the concrete slab underneath.
The exposed concrete will be covered with compacted road base (gravel) and covered with AstroTurf during trading hours to ensure it is safe and accessible for pedestrians.
