Local Zonta Club bettering lives of Ipswich women

Council is partnering with the Zonta Club of Ipswich to ensure women experiencing or at risk of domestic and family violence can access essential support services.

One hundred A4 stickers with contact details for local domestic violence support services are ready to go on female bathrooms across the city, after Zonta received a grant under Council’s Quick Response Funding Program.

Mayor Teresa Harding said Ipswich is united against domestic and family violence.

“Across our city, organisations like Zonta are recognising domestic and family violence for what it is – preventable – by tackling the root causes,” Mayor Harding said.

“Seventeen percent of women, or one in six, experience physical and/or sexual violence from a current or previous partner, and 46 percent of women who experience violence from a current partner do not seek advice or support after the incident.

“It’s been fantastic to work with Leanne Roberts and the team of volunteers who are making the right information available and keeping our community safe.”

Stickers will be placed in Queens Park and Lobley Park, with the majority available for local businesses, sporting facilities and places of entertainment to install in bathrooms.

Division 4 Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said domestic and family violence is preventable within our community.

“Ninety percent of domestic violence victims are women, and every person impacted – male or female – is one victim too many,” Cr Kunzelmann said.

“That is why this project is so important in helping put a stop to domestic and family violence within our community.

“I am committed to working towards a community where all family members are safe, treated with respect and as equals.”
