Be inspired to get outdoors and appreciate Ipswich’s Bremer River and our stretch of the Brisbane River with Ipswich WaterFest 2024.
Ipswich City Council Chief Executive Officer Sonia Cooper said from March to May there were free and low-cost activities for all ages across the city.
“Ipswich WaterFest 2024 brings into focus the many ways we can enjoy our waterways from sustainable nature-based recreation to community habitat planting events,” Ms Cooper said.
“The program includes learn to fish and creek exploration activities during Easter school holidays, and a family-friendly celebration day at Queens Park Environmental Education Centre.”
Ms Cooper said Ipswich WaterFest 2024 also celebrated ongoing community and council efforts to improve our waterways.
“Ipswich’s waterways are home to incredible species of plants and animals, such as the unique lungfish and iconic platypus, as well as providing opportunities for canoeing, fishing and nature exploration,” Ms Cooper said.
“By highlighting and valuing our creek and river systems we can work together to improve the health and condition of Ipswich waterways for the benefit of all.”
A highlight of Ipswich WaterFest 2024 is the Catch, Snap & Win Fishing Competition which runs from Thursday 28 March to Sunday 14 April, hosted by Ipswich City Council and fishing school 2 Bent Rods.
The competition has categories for all ages, with a total prize pool of $2400 including a kayak.
2 Bent Rods Co-founder Sam Beckmann said Ipswich has great spots for dropping in a line and catching both freshwater and estuarine species.
“Fishing is a valuable life skill, and the Catch, Snap & Win Fishing Competition is open to anglers of all ages and abilities,” she said.
“Responsible fishing is also a great way to learn more about Ipswich’s environment, such as the impact of pest fish species and how our actions on land directly impact the water.”
