Ipswich celebrates social connections for Queensland Seniors Month

Community Culture Arts annd Sport Committee Deputy Chairperson Councillor Kate Kunzelmann is looking forward to Seniors Month.

Celebrating the contributions of older residents and fostering social connections will be the focus when Ipswich celebrates Queensland Seniors Month this October.

Queensland Seniors Month runs from 1 to 31 October and this year has the theme ‘social connections’ to encourage all generations to connect and celebrate the contribution of seniors.

Community, Culture, Art and Sports Committee Deputy Chairperson Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said council was supporting a range of events to celebrate the month.

“Every day our seniors go above and beyond for our community, from volunteering in our community organisations to helping with caring for their grandchildren,” Cr Kunzelmann said.

“The contribution by seniors to our community is invaluable and it is important we take time to acknowledge it.

“In Ipswich, a range of community activities are planned with the Ipswich Seniors Expo on Tuesday 11 October at Ipswich Showgrounds the main event locally.

“The expo is being delivered in partnership with Able Australia and is an opportunity for seniors and members of the community to connect, share and engage.

“A range of service providers who can support seniors will be showcased at the expo.”

Throughout the month of October people of all ages, cultures, and abilities will come together and connect, celebrating the essential roles that older people play in our communities. All in all, it is going to be a connect fest!

Queensland is gearing up to enjoy the second annual Queensland Seniors Month. From humble beginnings 62 years ago, this statewide celebration has outgrown its nine-day week and has become a month-long event.

Connecting Queenslanders through inclusive events and activities, Seniors Month will bring people of all ages, cultures, and abilities together within their community, uniting them through shared interests and passions. It also provides a great opportunity to discover new programs and activities, and support services.

“Council has partnered with community centres at Redbank Plains, Goodna, Rosewood, Springfield, Camira, Gailes and Riverview to host a range of Seniors Month activities,” Cr Kunzelmann said.

“Despite its name, Seniors Month is for people of all ages to reflect and celebrate the contribution of seniors to our community.

“I encourage seniors to take part and for everyone to take the time to thank those seniors in their life who make such a wonderful contribution to the rich fabric of our community.”

Queensland Seniors Month coincides with United Nations International Day of Older Persons on 1 October and Grandparents Day on 30 October.

The Ipswich Seniors Expo is on Tuesday 11 October from 10am to 1pm at Ipswich Showgrounds Exhibition and Display Centre, 81 Warwick Road, Ipswich.
