Telstra will make free phone calls and Wi-Fi available from payphones across Ipswich throughout the festive period.
The initiative, in its fourth year, is part of a nationwide program and aims to help residents reach out to those who matter most and connect people separated by distance or circumstance.
Residents and visitors can take advantage of the free calls from December 24 to 1 January 2020 including free local, national and standard mobile calls from Telstra payphones as well as free Wi-Fi from selected Telstra Air Wi-Fi access points.
Telstra customer value management executive Jana Kotatko said Christmas is a time to connect or reconnect with family, friends and loved ones with the free initiative helping to break down financial barriers for the community.
“While many of us rely on smartphones and tablets, we know there’s a lot of people, including some of the community’s most vulnerable, who’ll use our payphones to make a call that will matter this holiday period,” Ms Kotatko said.
“We know how successful the free call period was last year so this year we’re extending it from Christmas Eve through to New Year’s Day.”
In 2018, more than 120,000 calls were placed and more than 23,000 users connected to Telstra Air hotspots during the free period which ran from December 24 to 26.
This year, it is predicted to increase with more people making the most of no charge calls across the extended dates.
