History to be bought to life for interactive Ipswich Libraries display

Ipswich children will be enticed to travel back in time when council’s local history website, Picture Ipswich, comes alive in a space created at Ipswich Libraries.

Community, Culture Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the Picture Ipswich installation was made possible when Ipswich Libraries was awarded a $9,700 Strategic Priorities Grant from the State Library of Queensland.

“Led by Ipswich Libraries, in partnership with council’s Cultural Heritage team, the project will help connect our youngest residents with the heritage and history of our community and city,” Cr Fechner said.

“As home to Australia’s only stand-alone public children’s library, we are excited to continue to offer fresh and engaging programs that inspire families to discover the joy of reading together.

“We thank the State Library of Queensland for this grant for children in Ipswich.”

Picture Ipswich is an online historical archive of about 19,200 images, movies, maps, school resources, oral histories, local stories and audio recordings provided by the community which captures the unique local history of Ipswich over the past two centuries.

“We are looking forward to the interesting conversations the display is sure to spark as children see images of where their parents and grandparents grew up and hear old stories that involve family members,” Cr Fechner said.

The Picture Ipswich installation will have a retro-style corner (circa 1960s), additional seating and self-directed activities to support participation and stimulate ideas.
