Call for community feedback on Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network

Cycling enthusiasts and pedestrians should make tracks as council welcomes community input to shape Ipswich’s inner city cycle network.

Growth, Infrastructure and Waste (GIW) Committee Chairperson Mayor Teresa Harding said the Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network is a key component of council’s Ipswich Central Cycle Project.

“The Ipswich CBD and older, more established areas of Ipswich currently have limited cycle infrastructure,” Mayor Harding said.

“With the revitalisation of the CBD well underway, a well-designed cycle network through the city centre will help people to get in and out of the city, from any direction.

“We want to hear from the community about what council should consider along the preferred route, as we progress towards starting the detailed design.

“Community can share what they think about the project overall and offer any suggestions and concerns about the project, such as safety hotspots, impacts, access issues and infrastructure design solutions.”

The Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network will enable cyclists entering the CBD from existing and planned bikeways to the north, south, east and west of the city, to safely connect to and through the Ipswich CBD in order to access their destination.

“As Ipswich grows, we want to make sure all people can benefit from a well-planned city,” Mayor Harding said.

“We want to get more people walking, cycling, scootering and skateboarding to work, the shops, school and public transport.

“If we all do our bit, not only will the Ipswich community be healthier, our transport network will be under less strain and be more sustainable.”

Cycling through Ipswich Central

Putting the right pedestrian and cycle facilities in place across Ipswich is essential for building liveable and sustainable communities. Pedestrian and cycle facilities are incorporated into the design of new developments and major road upgrades. Ipswich Central and older, more established areas of Ipswich, have limited cycle facilities. Council is working towards creating a network of these facilities within 5km of Ipswich Central.

This is called the Ipswich Central Cycle Projects. It involves the delivery of key cycle projects to the north, south, east and west of Ipswich Central.

The Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network will be delivered in stages, with some detailed design planned to start in 2023/2024.

GIW Deputy Chair Councillor Paul Tully said the Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network is a deliverable of iGO, council’s masterplan for Ipswich’s transport future.

“Ipswich is one of the fastest-growing cities, not only in Queensland but also in Australia, and council is committed to improving the city’s liveability and sustainability through improved access and transport options,” Cr Tully said.

“It is equally dedicated to ensuring the community feels heard and engaged, so we encourage Ipswich locals to share their voice.”
