Five things not to miss at this year’s Galvanized festival

Galvanized is the city’s festival of heritage, showcasing the best heritage experiences Ipswich has to offer.

Ipswich is gearing up to be transported back in time with Galvanized – A Festival of Heritage.

The festival, from 29 August to 8 September, has more than 30 events showcasing Ipswich’s rich heritage.

Here are five events you don’t want to miss:

1. Steam and Smoke BBQ

Make unforgettable memories this Father’s Day with a day of barbecue and steam-themed food trucks, spicy delights and smokin’ good fun at the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops.

Sip on craft beer, local artisan gin and other drinks while enjoying live rock music, dance performances and captivating entertainers. Cruise through the extensive display of vintage vehicles and bring out your competitive side with games and activities. On from 9.30am to 4pm on Sunday 1 September, entry is $5. To book and for more info visit Ipswichfestivals.com.au. There’s even chance to pre-book a ride in a steam train!

2. The Baker’s Ball

Step back in time and join a WWII victory dinner dance, paying homage to the Australian Women’s Land Army. On Saturday 31 August from 5.30pm to 11.30pm, The Baker’s Ball will take you to three historic locations throughout Marburg. Tickets to the fundraising dinner are $100 and include a welcome drink, food, entertainment and tea and coffee, with a cash bar available on the night. Dust off your glad rags and prepare to dance the night away. Book your tickets here.

3. Haunted: Ipswich CBD Ghost Tours

Get your spook on with a walk through the city centre and hear real ghost stories gathered from archives, newspapers, books and local residents. Come “spook spotting” as locals recall ghost hunting, learn about the creepy Cribb house, discover the secret hidden under the police station and be watched by the man in the museum on this two-hour guided tour through the Ipswich city centre. 4. Japanese Tea Ceremony and Tea Tasting

For a more calming Galvanized experience, enjoy a short tour through Nerima Gardens in Queens Park to interpret key design elements that infuse both the Australian and Japanese cultures. Explore the ties with our sister city Nerima and watch as Japanese hosts explain the ritual of tea-making and the ceremonial uses. Then participate in a workshop of how to brew tea correctly and hear about the history of tea while tasting different flavours and styles. The two-hour sessions will take place on Saturday 31 August at 9am and 11am. For more information and bookings, visit Discover Ipswich.

5. Wild Foods & Cultural Festival

Be immersed in First Nations culture with a huge line up of deadly artists and performers, with bush tucker foods and cooking demonstrations, performances and workshops stalls, food trucks, and tonnes of free family entertainment, including arts and crafts, rides, fireworks and more. This one-day community event will take place on Saturday 31 August from 11am to 7pm at Ipswich Turf Club. It is free to attend and seeks to enhance connections between all peoples and the land, encourage new cultural experiences and strengthen bonds and harmonious relationships.
