Calling all artists of Ipswich and beyond – the Ipswich Art Awards are back for 2024, with the work of emerging and established artists taking centre stage.

Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said she was looking forward to this year’s awards.

“The quality of art submitted is consistently of a high standard, I’m sure 2024 entries will be no different,” Cr Augustine said.

“The awards give us an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the work of these passionate visual artists, whether they’re just starting their journey or have an established following.

“The arts scene in Ipswich enriches the lives of our residents, bringing people together from all walks of life, inspiring the city.”

Ipswich Art Awards categories recognise different art forms, from digital art to sculptures.

This year’s categories are:

  • Painting: Acrylic and Oil
  • Painting: Watercolour
  • Drawing and Pastels
  • Three Dimensions e.g. sculptures, ceramics
  • Photography
  • Print Making (not digital)
  • Mixed Media
  • New Media (digital, not printed)

“Winners in each category plus a People’s Choice Award will take home $1,500 prize money, with the Best of Show winner receiving $3,000,” Cr Augustine said.

“As part of the ongoing development of the awards, this year artists are required to write an artwork statement and supply a photo of their work as part of their submission.

“To support artists, council will be hosting workshops on 17 and 24 August to help them submit a strong application and will provide drop in sessions at the Ipswich Art Workshop for people who may have questions.”

Entries opened earlier this month and close at 6pm on 31 August 2024.

Opening night of the exhibition will be held on 1 November, with art on display until 9 November, giving the public a chance to see the artwork firsthand and purchase anything they love.
