Behind the Screens: Final countdown at the Hotel Commonwealth

The construction site at Hotel Commonwealth is a hive of activity as council prepares to hand over the expanded, iconic venue to hotel managers AusHotels.

From floor tiling in the new amenities block to installing the dumbwaiter in the kitchen, the final touches are being made by council’s construction team, Hutchinson Builders, before AusHotel’s contractors move in to complete the fit-out.

In the past few weeks, roofing has been completed for the external bin store and fire pump room and external aluminium glazing and doors have been installed, along with two lifts with accessibility in mind for patrons to easily navigate between the three levels.

Wall and floor finishes are underway in some areas with wall lining and cladding continuing in others, and door frames are in place throughout the now-expansive hotel.

Looking ahead, essential services will be connected to the site with Energex and NBN completing power supply and telecommunications cabling.

The car park is being cleared and levelled ready for visitors, and footpath restoration work along Bremer Street will soon be completed in a sign of the construction site wrapping up.

Finally, all services to the building will be tested and commissioned before Hutchinsons’ crew says goodbye to this incredible transformation, fit for a growing and vibrant city.

Join us in two weeks’ time as we next peek behind the screens at the Nicholas Street Venue building. With both the Venue and Hotel Commonwealth on track to open their doors to the public this year, there is so much to look forward to in the Nicholas Street Precinct in 2024.
